They work with individuals of all ages, including children, adults, and the elderly, often in hospitals, schools, mental health services, and prisons.
Art Therapists support people dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, and other emotional or psychological difficulties, using art as a way to communicate when words are too difficult.
Students must complete a postgraduate qualification approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HSPC), such as a Master's degree in Art Therapy or Art Psychotherapy. Before applying for a course, they usually need a degree in art, psychology, or a related subject along with experience working in mental health or social care settings.
Art Therapists working for the NHS typically start on Band 6 of the pay scale, earning between £35k and £42k per year. With more experience, they can move up to Band 7, earning up to £50k or more.
Art Therapists working in charities or community settings might earn less, but the role can still be very rewarding.
Key qualifications to take are A-level Art, Psychology and BTEC Health.
