The role involves conducting research through observations using telescopes and other instruments, often located at observatories using telescopes and other instruments, often located at observatories or through space-based platforms.  They analyse data to test theories, develop new models, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.  Aspiring astronomers typically begin by obtaining a degree in physics, astrophysics, or mathematics.  

Most professional astronomy roles require a PhD, particularly for those conducting research, working in academia, or holding senior positions at observatories or research institutions.  Entry-level astronomers typically earn between £25k and £35k per year.  Those with more experience can expect £35k to £45k.
