Observation Beehive

Liverpool Life Sciences were visited by Lesley, Roger and Damien from The Urban Beekeepers Association last week. They brought with them their huge observation beehive and a wealth of experience!

Students from across KS4 were able to observe 30,000 bees going about their business in the hive and had a huge range of bee and honey-related questions answered. Highlights included seeing the famous "waggle dance" (which bees use to communicate) and putting their ears to the air vents to hear the sound of the hive!

We first collaborated with the beekeepers in a Scanning Electron Microscope project starting last winter and culminating in a superb Big Bang competition entry for Zac and Sam in Year 10, but the work has broadened out to include a term of PBL projects, trips out and a long-lasting partnership.
