Black History is mainly taught through explaining suffering-events such as The Slave Trade and The Civil Rights Movement, and are often some of the only topics which students learn about in schools. The achievements of black people are rarely celebrated in school’s curriculum. We are very keen to play our part in changing this for the better. Students in Year 11 and 10 had assemblies on the subject which were created and delivered by other students to ensure they were a true opportunity to raise awareness, build understanding and celebrate success. Our students did a fantastic, inspirational job. We are also making this change in lessons. In Social Sciences, the studies students explore are often conducted by white people, with an unconscious cultural bias, in English lessons the books on the Curriculum are often ‘classics’ featuring white characters. Black History Month aims to give a focus on showing people a history and culture that they have not had the opportunity to learn about. We want to make sure we embed this and do not perpetuate the failings of the past.
