They attended an event to promote sustainability in maritime engineering, where they heard some informative talks about the future of commercial shipping and also had the opportunity to chat to employers in the sector.
They watched the finals of “Float your Boat,” where sixth form colleges were competing to build a sustainable craft to sail across the marina, and enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch with many eminent guests, including three Lord Mayors!
But the highlight of the trip was going on board 'The Danny', the only remaining steamboat built on the Mersey still afloat. The Danny was extremely interesting, with an engine room driven by coal, a traditional steam whistle and a sumptuous art deco lounge. Dr Mitchell's favourite thing on the steamboat was the steam-powered power steering!
All the students had a lovely day, learnt a lot about the past and future of merchant shipping and will be keeping in touch with the people they met on the day.
