Their job is to bring things back to their original condition, whilst protecting their historical or artistic value.  They may work on castles, paintings, old documents, or antique furniture.  The role involves careful research, hands-on restoration work, and using special tools and materials.  

Attention to detail, and a strong interest in history or art are important in this job.

Most people start with a college course or apprenticeship in a related subject, such as art and design, conservation, or construction.  Some choose to study for a degree in conservation, heritage, fine art, or furniture restoration.

In the UK, a restoration specialist just starting out might earn around £20k-£25k per year.  With more experience, salaries can rise to between £30k and £40k.  Hightly skilled specialist, especially those working on rare or valuatble items or managing projects, can earn over £45k a year.
