They review plans and specifications regarding structural integrity, fire safety, ventilation, accessibility, and energy efficiency. Additionally, they inspect construction sites directly and possess the authority to enforce standards when work falls short.

Salaries for entry-level surveyors start between £26,000 and £32,000 per year. Mid-level professionals typically earn £35,000 to £55,000, while senior surveyors and managers can achieve salaries of £60,000 or more, depending on location and experience.

Entry usually requires a degree in building surveying, construction, civil engineering, or structural engineering. Alternatively, a four-year Level 6 degree apprenticeship offers a combined work-and-study route.

Success in this field requires strong technical knowledge, analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. Surveyors must also meet professional registration requirements to certify specific works while applying technical regulations fairly, consistently, and with decision-making confidence.
