Safety is their top priority, requiring quick decisions and compusure under pressure.

Starting salaries are aound £47k annually, rising to £70k-£150k with experience depending on the airline, aircraft type and rank.  Captains flying long haul routes or taking on training roles can earn over £150k.

Entry routes include self-funded flight training (costing £80k to £120k), university degrees with flight training, military service, or airline cadet programmes.  Some airlines offer fully funded apprenticeships where trainees earn while learning, though these are highly competitive with limited spots.

Key skills include communication, teamwork, decision-making, focus, resilience and maintaining calm under pressure.
