These parts are often used in items such as cars, planes and medical equipment.

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control.  The machinist sets up the machine, loads the materials, checks measurements and makes sure everything runs smoothly.  They also identify and fix any problems to keep production accurate and efficient.

A beginner might earn between £20k and £25k a year.  With more experience and the ability to programme machines or work with complex parts, this can rise to between £30k and £40k per year.  Highly skilled machinists in specialist industries or shift-based roles can earn even more.

To become a CNC machinist, it is useful to take a college course in engineering, manufacturing or machining.  Many machinists begin through apprenticeships, which combine training with practical work.  Employers often look for good maths and IT skills, as well as strong attention to detail.  Knowing how to read technical drawings is also important, as it helps the machinist understand exactly which part needs to be made.
