The job involves measuring and cutting materials, laying bricks in precise patters, and making sure everything is level and sturdy. Bricklayers often follow detailed plans called blueprints, to create strong, well-built structures. The role also requires good teamwork, attention to detail and physical strength. It involves lifting heavy materials and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Let's talk money! Bricklayers can expect to earn a yearly salary that varies depending on experience and locations. For beginners and apprentices the starting salary is usually around £18k to £23k per year. Once they gain more experience and skills, a fully qualified bricklayer can earn between £30k and £40k a year, and more in big cities like London.
Formal qualifications aren't always required to become a bricklayer but having some can help. Many people start by doing a college course like a Level 1 or Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying which teaches the basics. An alternative route is becoming an apprentice where they learn the skills on the job while also studying part-time. Apprenticeships normally last about two years and give hands-on experience while earning a wage.
Good GCSEs in subjects like Maths and English are helpful,as the work involves measuring and working with plans. Above all, having practical skills, attention to detail and a good work ethic are key to success in this job.
