Year 10 students Zach Ferguson and Sam Davies have collaborated with members of the Urban Bee keepers association to begin to map which pollen bees are bringing back to the hive at different times of year with a view to influencing urban planting to reflect the bees preferences. They used the the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to identify the types of pollen and work out what plants the bees have been visiting. This information can then be used to make decisions about which plants to grow in urban areas to maximise the benefit to bees.
