Tao went to Imperial College London and studied a Master of Engineering in Computing (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) and has shared the following:
I really enjoyed the Algorithm Design and Analysis module at Imperial. You learn about various data structures, algorithms and learn a cool new language called Haskell too! The module is taught extremely well and is absolutely essential for any aspiring software engineer, because any job application process will always involve multiple interview rounds which are based on the knowledge you acquire from this module.
During sixth form, I had the amazing opportunity of attending several summer schools at Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial, which ultimately solidified my decision to study Computer Science at university. I was also lucky to participate in several competitions such as the Regional Team Maths Olympiad, where we managed to place third out of hundreds of teams!
When it comes to choosing subjects at A Level, this is the three step approach I would ask myself:
1. What career do I want to do?
2. What degree do I need to have that career?
3. What are the A Level subjects I need to study for this degree?
Personally, I would recommend studying Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at NLA. Computer Science is not a hard entry requirement for most courses at university, however if you can choose it now then I would definitely recommend it too! Computer Science was not offered at A Level during my time, but the reason I stayed was solely because of the teachers. I’m willing to bet that you won’t find teachers like them anywhere else and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been taught by them. They trusted me, and allowed me to have the autonomy I needed to achieve the best results. Most importantly, they cared and were always available when I needed support and advice about my future. Without them I would not be where I am today. I have zero regrets!
