Job of the Week: Baker

Bakers often start work early in the morning to make sure everything is fresh for customers. They might work in a bakery, supermarket, or even run their own shop.

Creativity is important, especially when decorating cakes or coming up with new recipes.  Bakers also need to pay attention to details, follow recipes carefully, and work quickly, especially during busy times.

For someone just starting out as a baker, like an apprentice or trainee, they can expect to earn around £16k to £20k a year.

As they gain more skills and experience, this can go up to £22k to £30k for more advanced roles, like a head baker or pastry chef.  Bakers managing their own business can earn more, depending on how successful they are.

They aren't strict qualifications required to become a baker, but having some training or experience helps a lot.  Many people start by doing an apprenticeship, where they learn on the job while earning a qualification like an NVQ in Bakery or Food Production.

Others might take a college course in baking, patisserie, or cating to learn the basics of bread making, pastry skills, and food safety.

You don't need top grades, but being good at practical skills, maths and paying attention to detail is important.
