Software Developers design, build and maintain computer programmes and applications, from mobile apps and websites to systems for schools, hospitals and businesses.

They usually work in teams, codling in languages such as Python and Java, testing their work, fixing bugs and adding new features.  The job is both creative and logical, and can be done in an office or remotely.

Salaries range from about £25k for juniors to £60k for experienced developers, with averages of £35k-£60k.  Pay is often higher in London and large tech firms, and some developers earn bonuses or freelance income.

Routes into the role include university degrees in computing or software engineering, apprenticeships, or self-study with a project portfolio.  Employers value coding ability, problem-solving and teamwork, while industry certifications can strengthen job prospects.
