They analyse sources like documents, artefacts, books and interviews to gather insights.  A strong educational background in history is essential.  Most begin with GCSEs, particularly in History and English, followed by A-Levels, where History is crucial.  A bachelor's degree in History, Archaeology, or a similar field provides the foundation for this career.  

Starting salaries for historians in roles like museums or research assistants range from £25,000 to £30,000, increasing to £35,000-£50,000 with experience or senior roles.
