Their job involves designing fire protection systems, planning escape routes, and checking that buildings meet fire safety regulations.
Fire safety engineers use maths, science and the knowledge of how fire behaves to protect lives and property.
Someone just starting out may earn around £25k to £30k per year. With experience, salaries can rise to between £40k and £60k. Senior engineers or those working on large-scale or high-risk buildings can earn over £70k per year.
Most people start by studying engineering at university, usually fire engineering, civil engineering, or a similar subject. Some people choose to follow an apprenticeship pathway instead. Some then go ont to do a postgraduate course in fire safety or gain experience through graduate schemes or level 7 apprenticeships.
