Artists create visual work to express ideas, emotions, or messages, using mediums like painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking or digital art.

They may work on personal projects, commissions, or with galleries, museums, or businesses.  

Salary: Starting out, many artists earn little, especially if self-employed.  Average earnings are £20k-£30k, though income is unpredictable.  Successful artists can earn significantly more, particularly if their work is in high demand or exhibited widely.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A degree in Fine Art or related field can help but isn't essential.
  • Portfolio: A strong portfolio is vital

Skills:

Creativity, technical proficiency, communication, adapability, and netowrking are key to gaining opportunities and exposure.

Schools in the Trust do workshops on practical skills including, but not limited to: drawing from observation and imagination, painting, colour theory, life drawing (drawing anatomy from a live model), portraiture, compositional skills, pattern design such as wallpapers and fabrics, printmaking and how to structure a project from start to finish.
